Introduction
Basics of Fashion Sketches or Fashion Illustration
Inspired by the world of fashion! In today's fashion, companies are looking for creative people who can communicate their fashion ideas into sketches and designs, clearly and efficiently.
In simple term, Sketching expresses your design ideas onto paper (or computer). Ideas right from your imaginative mind into visual illustration that you can showcase or share with people. To develop your fashion design drawing skills in the early stages, figure templates and simple methods of developing figure poses will help you express your ideas.
Next by adding sketches of fabrics, adding colours and accessories to your figure template, will enhance the eventual sketch. The ultimate goal of your sketch is to provide you and the people you want to share, the feel of how the garment will look like when worn. This gives the visual impact!
There are two main methods to sketch fashion illustration, either through paper sketching or through the use of computer software (Adobe Illustrator ®). For a start, we will focus on using the traditional method, i.e., using paper to do fashion design sketches.
Tips on how to draw :
1)      Figure Drawing (Choice 1)or Use a Figure Template(Choice 2)
You can start by doing free hand drawing or using traced figure template. The former, (choice 1) you have to study the anatomy of a human body – e.g men, women, children. That is the human figure portions, e.g the head, neck ,shoulders and chest, the lower back, the legs etc. (see Attached figure). For fashion drawing the portions are usually exaggerated to express a strong image on the legs or the body.
The latter (Choice 2), you can just simply traced from an existing figure template or from a photograph of a fashion model taken from a page in a magazine.

2)      In fashion sketches, it is also essential to know how to draw fabric, and more importantly know how to draw the folds of clothing. The lighting effect, shading depth will enhance the quality of the sketch and gives a 3 dimensional illustrations.
3)      The use of colours and the different techniques in reflecting the movements and the poses of the model.
4)      In clothing sketch, do include a back view with your sketch.

Step by Step guide to drawing a Fashion Sketch

Fashion sketch is like an art. The aim is to give you ideas and guide you on a step by step approach to draw a fashion sketch. Study the fashion around us, or through the internet about the world of fashion. Fashion can be as simple as a piece of cloth wrapping around a model, but as to how you, as the fashion designer enhances the visual impact, by adding colors, lighting effects, folds, and all the drawing techniques to the model. These showcases your originality, your passion about how the clothing will look like when worn.
 What you need:
·Art materials and supplies required to sketch a fashion design that you have in your mind

l        Easiest way is to use a fashion template. Traced (using tracing paper) the body template with the pose you want.. Trace the outline and major lines of the figure onto a sheet of tracing paper,   Add in facial features and hair styles if you like.

·Drawing a fashion sketch and fine tuning it
Lay a carbon paper in between your sketch book and your traced figure. Draw your own design, Fill in the rest of the drawing by retracing the head, feet and any details from your first tracing. Use a darker pencil (say 3B pencil) to do some fine tuning.
Alternatively, without using carbon paper, you can flip over your traced figure paper. By retracing the outlines of the full body sketch onto the sketch book, you can also achieve the same 'duplicate' body outlined with head, body, feet etc. Use a darker pencil (say 3B pencil)to do some fine tuning.
· Add colors, shading depth, folds, assessories to the fashion sketch

·Add patterns,   assessories to the final fashion sketch

Always remember, making sketches is a prerequisite for the fashion designers to market their ideas and designs. In the highly competitive fashion industry, fashion designers must have their own style and originality. And the fashion designers should also consider whether the collection you want to showcase has a market. Because, at the end of the day, the consumers are the ones who will buy your final apparels. So a fashion designer must also have the target people in mind when they do the sketch.
